A GRANDMOTHER from Yate has spent lockdown making protective, cotton face masks, to raise money for dementia awareness charity, the Alzheimer’s Society.

Wendy Prickett started making the masks after lockdown meant her days were no longer filled with helping to look after her young grandchildren.

Wendy has been raising funds for the charity since her mother sadly passed away with dementia in June 2019. She has raised almost £2,000 so far.

She said “I wanted to raise funds for research into this dreadful disease. I did the memory walk with some friends and raised £1,500 and wanted to raise more.

“I decided to make face masks as they are in demand at the moment to raise a bit of money for them. Each masks takes me around ten to fifteen minutes to make. I use mainly cotton based materials that I have bought or have leftover from clothes I have made for my grandchildren.

“It has really taken off and I have so far made over 350 masks and raised just over another £350 for the charity. I am over the moon with the response I’ve had!”

Daughter Emily said: “I’m really proud of what my mum has achieved and the fabulous amount she has raised for the Alzheimer’s Society. After mum posted on Facebook the response was amazing. Her masks are now all over the country, from Liverpool to London! I have had nothing but positive feedback on how well the masks fit.

My children like to wear their masks, they’re not frightened by them. To be able to help people, the way my mum has, I think is brilliant.” Masks are £2 each for adult and child sizes, call Wendy on 0798 020 9811.
